69 Virent (an iron steamer) 1725
Short Brothers
James Westoll of Sunderland. 260.0 ft. long. Eric Judge advises (thanks Eric) that Virent was abandoned off Ferrol in NW Spain due to a fractured tail shaft. On Mar. 24, 1890, while en route from Salina (there are places named Salina in both Malta & in Italy (a volcanic island). Neither seem obviously to be the correct Salina) to Liverpool with a cargo of grain. 15 were saved but 9 lives were lost, drowned when their boat overturned in the surf. (Per Sunderland Echo & Shipping Gazette). However, I now believe the above data to be incorrect, having read this article ex here. Virent was under tow by Trekieve, a steamer, when the hawsers parted on Mar. 20, 1890 during a hurricane. 15 lives were lost & 9 were saved, including Virent's captain. The vessel ended up under 'Priorino Grande' in deep water. The article further clarifies that the vessel was en route from Sulina (Romania, Black Sea) which makes much more sense for the export of grain. It would seem that the vessel was lost on Mar. 22, 1890. Y

I read that the vessel sank on Feb. 22, 1894, after a collision with Englishman, a tug, when 8 miles WSW of Seaham Harbour - when en route from Sunderland to Devonport (Plymouth) with a cargo of coal. I have not read if there was any loss of life.

At 4 a.m. on Sep. 21, 1885, Ashdene ran into Celestine (or Celeste), a Baie St. Paul (NE of Quebec City), Quebec, Canada, schooner, at Indian Cove, Quebec City. Celestine (or Celeste), arriving with a cargo of cordwood, was cut down to the water's edge & was waterlogged. Her crew abandoned her & she drifted up river (the St. Lawrence) to be recovered by a salvage crew. As per these (1 & 2) contemporary news reports. Ashdene was en route from Cow Island to Montreal, Canada. There is a Cow Island located NE of Halifax, Nova Scotia, but the webmaster does not know if that was Ashdene's correct port of departure.84989
10 Ashford (an iron steamer) 1 1964
later
1909Joseph L. Thompson & Sons
The vessel is Lloyd's Register ('LR') listed at least from 1881/82 thru 1892/93, the last register that the webmaster has available. 276.0 ft. long, signal letters WJRM. Initially owned by Thompson, Wrightson & Co. of Sunderland. On Oct. 10, 1884 (I think) a number of vessels, including Ashford, bound for Sunderland most likely, ex Rotterdam in ballast, were sheltering in Bridlington Bay, Yorkshire. During the night, Ashford dragged her anchor & came into collision with Biddick, bound for London with a cargo of coal. Extensive damage resulted to both vessels (Ashford 'had a breach in her side 14 feet by 4 feet'), & both had to be run on shore. All as you can read in this contemporary newspaper cutting. Clearly the vessel was soon repaired. LR of 1886/87 reports the vessel as owned by Second Standard Steam Ship Co. Limited, of Sunderland, with J. Thompson the manager. Speeding Marshall & Co. became the manager in 1890/91 in which year the vessel became listed at 1909 tons. The Mercantile Navy List of 1890 indicates that the vessel was rather built in 1882. As does the 1900 equivalent which records 'The Speeding and Marshall Steam Shipping Co. Ltd.', of Sunderland, as her then owner. I have chosen to list the vessel in these pages as built in 1881 as recorded by LR. Much later, on Jun. 29, 1906 (per eBay vendor 'scott-base' - thanks!), Ashford was in collision with Pirat, a German barque, when 15 miles off Beachy Head. Ashford was taken in tow by Dominion, a tug, but after 2 hours she sank. Her entire crew, excepting the carpenter, were saved by the tug. Pirat (image at left) was towed by tug Simla into Dover, was repaired & lasted until 1910. That's all I know. Can you add anything?

later
1351Osbourne Graham & Co. at Hylton
The vessel was launched on Apl. 28, 1881, for Davison, Bisset & Co. of Liverpool, who owned the vessel for a great many years, certainly thru 1897/98. Strangely this launch announcement states she had 220 HP engines! James Davison was her first captain. Per 1 (Miramar, link, you now must be registered to access). 223.0 ft. long, signal letters VQMC later QTWV. The vessel surely travelled to Australia - I need to check at Trove, Australia for details. In 1901, so I read, the vessel was sold to 'L. & A. Fili. Massone di G.' of Genoa, Italy, & renamed Nonno Angelo. Miramar advises that the vessel was broken up in Q2 of 1915.

A modest item. On Jan. 19, 1893, Saltram was en route from New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A., to Bremerhaven, Germany, with a cargo of phosphate rock & cotton, with T. Wren in command. I presume it must have encountered a major storm in the N. Atlantic since its decks were swept & one of its 22 crew members was lost. Then stated to be owned by J. A. Bellamy of Plymouth & registered there. As per this report. Gary Hicks advises that the vessel went missing en route from Philadelphia, U.S.A. (left Oct. 26, 1899), to Havana, Cuba. Was last seen Oct. 28, 1899 passing Delaware Breakwater Y

A copy of the 1881/82 'Marine Engineer' was recently sold via eBay. That volume would surely contain information useful to this site but does not include a list of ships built in 1881.1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889.
1882 (data in part from here (Manual of Shipping; Iron Manufactures; Railways, Docks, Canals; etc. etc. Published 1884) at pages 16 through 30). But with adjustments.
On May 21, 2012, a bound volume of 'The Marine Engineer' was sold on eBay. The volume included two years of the monthly publication, i.e. Vol. III & Vol. IV, covering in total the two years of Apl. 1881, thru Mar. 1883. It sold for U.S. $135.50.
I should also mention a list of ships built in 1882 was published in 'The Engineer' on Jan. 12, 1883. The list was available, long gone now, via eBay vendor prints-for-all.

Glengoil Steamship Co. Ltd. A modest item. On Dec. 23, 1892 the vessel was en route from Norfolk, Virginia, to Liverpool with a cargo that included wheat & cotton, with R. Gray in command. I presume it must have encountered a major storm in the N. Atlantic since its decks were swept & one of its 30 crew members was lost. Then stated to be owned by J. L. Gracie of Tynemouth & registered at Leith, Scotland. As per this report.

The vessel would appear to have been first Lloyd's Register ('LR') listed in 1890/91. Miramar advises (thanks) that the vessel was built for Dussarget & Bonnin of Bordeaux, France (as per LR of 1890/91) & launched on Feb. 7, 1883. Maybe Feb. 6, 1883 per another site. I have read also that it was first owned by Dussarget, Bonnin & Badille, of Bordeaux. In 1894, the vessel was sold to H. J. Tandonnet Frères, also of Bordeaux & in 1899 was sold again to G. Vallee of Rouen, France - in both cases with no change of vessel name. In Dec. 1902, the vessel became owned by Dansk-Franske Dampskibsselskab, of Esbjerg, Denmark, & was renamed Slesvig. LRs of 1908/09 & 1910/11 respectively list W. Schmidt & A. N. Petersen as the vessel's then managers. On Apl. 5, 1917, the vessel was requisitioned by the United Kingdom and, still named Slesvig, was operated by Lambert Bros. of London. 220.0 ft. long, later 220.1 ft., signal letters KWHJ, later NMCV, 100HP later 120HP engines by Carr & Co. Ltd. of Sunderland. On Aug. 7, 1917 the vessel, en route from Caen, France, to the Tyne, in ballast, was in collision with Cormorant near the Mouse Light Vessel in the Thames estuary. And sank. The small wreck is still on the sea floor today (in 2018) .So far I have not been able to establish what kind of vessel Cormorant was. I suspect it was a U.K. naval vessel but that is at present just my guess. There were a number of steamships of the name - in 1910/11 at least. A single crew list for Slesvig is available here. We thank Wikimedia & Bruun for making available the image at left & Ebbe Hove for bringing it to my attention. Which is of a 'gouache on paper' painting of Slesvig, sold at Bruun Rasmussen Auctions ('Bruun'), of Copenhagen, Denmark, on Aug. 27, 2018 for DKK 1,300 (EUR 175). The artist's name seems to be unknown. Is there anything you can add to the above - or correct? Y

Linthorpe (an iron screw ketch) 133
J. Morrice & Co. at Seaham.
The webmaster has not yet researched this vessel. Per this launch announcement Linthorpe was launched, on Oct. 21, 1884, at Seaham Harbour, the first ever launch there of an iron vessel & apparently the last also. The cutting advises that construction of the vessel was 'commenced by Messrs. Iliff & Johnson (the Seaham Shipbuilding Co.) but ... was condemned by ... Lloyd's Registry'. She has been 'completed by Mr. Towers, Blyth, under the management of D. M. Baxter, late of Monkwearmouth. She has now been classed with Veritas (French Lloyd's) for coasting purposes and is owned by Messrs Warne & Shiel, Middlesbrough'. Lloyd's Register of 1885/86 rather lists the vessel as i) built by J. Morrice & Co., ii) first registered in 1885 & iii) owned by E. Towers of Middlesbrough. I suspect that 1885 was the year when the vessel was first registered in the U.K. The Mercantile Navy List of 1890 reports the vessel to be then owned by Richard Gray of Bridlington Quay, Yorkshire, & registered at Hull. It was later registered at Liverpool, owned by (in red) the African Association. That article seems to say that Linthorpe was a rebuild of a vessel already built by Potts. Can that be correct? Linthorpe was lost in 1895 & the register for the vessel was closed in 1896. 88.0 ft. long, 25 HP. Can you add anything?

A vessel that had a very short life - lost on its maiden voyage - which was to Sydney, Australia with a cargo of coal. The vessel was intended for 'river' use in Australia. On Oct. 06, 1884, when about 15 miles S. of Port Macquarie, NSW, bad weather was encountered such that on the next day the vessel had to be abandoned. No lives were lost.

J. Laing of Sunderland, soon D. H. Morgan & Co., of Newport, Wales - in 1887/88 per Lloyd's Register. 260.5 ft. long, signal letters KHTM, 150 HP engines by J. W. & F. Wilson of Sunderland, many crew lists are available via this page. In 1890, the vessel is stated to have been registered at Whitby (from 1888) & owned by Benjamin T. Robinson of London & Wellburn G. Robinson of Whitby. The vessel went out of British registry in 1897, was then renamed Ada & owned by Ang. A/B Thor - K. O. F. Dalman, of Gothenburg, Sweden. I read that on Jun. 01, 1898 Ada was wrecked entering Honfleur, France, from Soderhamn, Sweden, with a cargo of timber.

What were the correct build numbers for 1884? 'Where Ships Are Born' states 70 vessels & 99,597 tons. While 'The Steamship' (at pages #6 & #22/23) stated 71 ships & the identical tonnage. The output of that year was, I read, seriously reduced as a result of a strike of engineers. However the output of James Laing was close to its 1883 values, & Doxford & Sons increased their output over the prior year, despite the strike. I need help with data. It is possible that 'The Steamship' chose not to list sailing vessels which were built that year, in their detailed list.
1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889.
1885 (data in part from here ('Marine Engineer', Apl. 1885 thru Mar. 1886) at pages 257 through 261), but with adjustments. It is interesting to note that a copy of that volume (1885/1886) was sold via eBay on Dec. 26, 2008 for U.S. $134.50.

The webmaster has not researched this vessel. Was initially owned by Compagnie Havraise Peninsulaire de Navigation a Vapeur of Le Havre, France. Niels Hald-Andersen advises (thanks so much!) as follows - Ville de Metz was sold in 1905 to Northern Steamship Co. of St. Petersburg, Russia (daughter company of Dansk-Russisk Steamship Co., of Copenhagen) & renamed Otto Berg, Was sold again, in 1912, to Okawa Unyu K.K., of Dairen, Japan, & renamed Daihoku Maru. Was sold in 1914 to Fukugawa Ringyo K.K., also of Dairen, & renamed Yeifuku Maru. Was sold in 1916 to Tanaka Gomei K.K., of Dairen, & renamed Eifuku Maru, And also sold in 1919 to Suyama Bunosuke, of Osaka, Japan & renamed Yeifuku Maru again. Was finally sold to Japanese ship-breakers in 1924. I should indicate that Miramar has some different data including ownership in 1905 by W. Briggs & Sons of Sunderland, at which time the vessel, maybe briefly, became ON 119204. Hopefully we will research the vessel's history soon. I do see that it was 351.0 ft. long, signal letters MADI, with 387 HP engines by George Clark Ltd. of Sunderland.

I have not researched this vessel. It was first Lloyd's Register ('LR') listed in 1887/88, owned by Pyman, Bell & Co., of Newcastle. 258.0 ft. long, 160 H.P., signal letters KSJP, later NHSD. The Mercantile Navy List of 1890 (thru 1896 in fact) lists Thomas Bell of Newcastle as her then managing owner. LR of 1892/93, the last LR edition available to the webmaster, still lists Pyman, Bell & Co. as the vessel's owner. See this site for data about George Pyman of Hartlepool, with brief data about Kathleen 70% down the page. The U.K. registry for the vessel was closed in 1896. Niels Hald-Andersen advises (thanks!) that in 1896 the vessel was sold to 'A/S Dampskibsselskabet Union', of Copenhagen, Denmark, & renamed Frisia. And was sold again, in Nov. 1910, to 'A/S Dampskibsselskabet Hafnia, Copenhagen (I)', also of Copenhagen. And sold again, in Feb. 1913, to 'A/S Dampskibsselskabet Hafnia, Copenhagen (II)', (P. Brown jr.) also of Copenhagen. The vessel was sold for the last time, in Oct. 1916, to 'Dansk-Norske Dampskibsselskab', of Copenhagen. Niels further advises that on Oct. 21, 1917, (confirmed here with vessel image), Frisia collided with an unknown steamship in the North Sea & sank, while en route from Methil (Firth of Forth, Scotland), to Odense, Denmark, with a cargo of 2097 tons of coal. 16 crew members lost their lives in the collision while 7 were rescued by Magnus, a Danish (Copenhagen) steamer. I read that the collision took place off Lerwick, Shetland Islands. The vessel would seem to have been in convoy at the time of the collision. Extensive data, in Danish, is at item 68 in this 'pdf' file. Additional data per this page ex this extensive Danish 'pdf' file (thanks!). Which file indicates that the vessel had a crew of 19 & 4 passengers aboard at the time, that 15 crew & 1 passenger were lost & 8 were saved by Magnus (the numbers do not add up). Anything you can add?

The webmaster has not researched this vessel. Which was initially owned by F. A. Jaques & Co. of Newcastle. Her launch. 230.0 ft. long, signal letters HDWK, 120 HP engines by Black, Hawthorn & Co. of Gateshead. The Mercantile Navy Lists ('MNL') of both 1890 & 1900 list Frederick A. Jaques, of Newcastle, as the vessel's then owner. It would seem that from 1900 the vessel was registered at Cardiff. MNL of 1910 lists W. J. Tillett Steamship Co. Ltd., of Cardoff, as her then owner.

A. Suart, of London, as per Lloyd's Register of 1889/90 & Alfred Suart, per the Mercantile Navy List of 1890. The vessel was launched on Feb. 2, 1889 as per this contemporary newspaper cutting. 300.0 ft. long, 250 HP, signal letters LBVF, rigged as a 3-masted schooner. LR of 1892/93 states that the vessel was then owned by Steamship Wildflower Ltd. ('Steamship'), with A. Suart the manager. It would seem that Steamship still owned the vessel when it was later lost. On Dec. 6, 1895, per this cutting, the vessel left Philadelphia, U.S.A., for Rouen, France, with a cargo of crude petroleum, under the command of Captain Stanwell. It passed Delaware Breakwater on Dec. 11, 1895, but was not later heard from. It was officially posted as 'missing' in Feb. 1896. Anything you can add?
