VESSELS BUILT AT SUNDERLAND
Listed in year of first registry. - 751
This page, re vessels built in the 1890s, is close to being complete. At least so it seems to me. With major input from John Oliver. Corrections in any of the material which follows, however tiny, would be most welcome. And any additions, of course!1890, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899.
1890 (Data sources include this 1890/1891 edition of 'The Marine Engineer'. Also from elsewhere in the site. And from a John Oliver list. Can you provide another list?)

The webmaster has not researched this vessel, which was initially owned by Oxus Steamship Co. Ltd. of London. In mid Jul. 1895, Oxus was en route from Sundsvall, Gulf of Bothnia, Sweden, to London with a cargo of wood pulp. On Jul. 20, 1895 it collided with Westella, built in Sunderland in 1872, which vessel was en route, in ballast, from Stockholm, Sweden, to Hernosand (now Härnösand, Gulf of Bothnia), Sweden. At a point 8 miles SSE of Fimmgrundet. Westella sank almost immediately after the collision, her crew being rescued by Oxus & landed at Gefle (now Gavle, Sweden, Gulf of Bothnia).

The vessel, completed in Jun. 1890, was launched on Apl. 19, 1890 for Wilhelm Wilhelmsen of Tonsberg, Norway, who I read paid 684,658.65 kroner for the vessel. 1 (data in Norwegian & image). The vessel attained 11 1/2 knots at her trials. In 1897/98 at least, per LR, the vessel was owned by 'Dmp. Slsk. "Tellus", a Wilhelmsen company. On Sep. 21, 1907, while en route from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, to Portland, Oregon, U.S.A, with a cargo of coal, the vessel was wrecked on North Spit, at the entrance to Grays Harbor, Washington, U.S.A. 302.0 ft. long, speed of 9 1/2 knots, signal letters HMJP, 210 later 238 HP engines by George Clark of Sunderland. Can anybody tell us about the circumstances of her loss? Y

The webmaster has not researched this vessel, a steamship of 1566/2454 (N/G) tons. Per 1 (Miramar, link, you now must be registered to access). But ... It was launched for The Persian Gulf Steamship Co. Ltd., of London, with William P. Newman serving as her manager. Miramar tells us that in 1895, for a short time, the vessel was owned by Clan Line Steamers Ltd., of Glasgow. In 1896, per the Mercantile Navy List ('MNL'), the vessel became owned by Wm. Keswick, of London, who from 1897 thru 1911 became the vessel's manager, the vessel being owned during that entire period by Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. of London. (MNLs re 1900 & 1910). I understand that in 1911, the vessel was acquired by N. Aso, of Nishinomiya, (near Osaka) Japan, & renamed Taga Maru. In 1917 the vessel became owned by Fukagawa Ringyo KK & in 1920 by Fukagawa Kisen KK, both also of Nishinomiya. In 1923, N. (Nobukazu) Tajima, of Amino (N. of Osaka), Japan, became the vessel's owner. 289.5 ft. long, signal letters MBLQ, 220 HP engines by North Eastern Marine Engineering Co. of Sunderland. Miramar advise that on Mar. 12, 1925, the vessel was wrecked near Ichiyezaki, Wakayama, Honshu Island, Japan. Thanks to Stephen Kentwell, I am able to provide, at left, a modest image of Taga Maru as was published in the 1916 Japan Steamships Register. Anything you can add?

J. Kemp, later (1900) The "Kingswell" Steam Ship Co. Ltd., later (1910) Dipwood Steamship Co. Ltd., both of Newcastle. A modest item. On Jan. 7, 1893, the vessel was en route from Odessa (Black Sea, Ukraine) to Antwerp with a general cargo that included sheep, with R. C. Thompson in command. I presume it must have encountered a major storm near Serpent Island in the Black Sea since its decks were swept & one of its 22 crew members was lost. Then stated to be owned by J. Kemp of Newcastle & registered there. As per this report. The vessel was apparently, however, owned by T. Pratt of Newcastle, when on Jan. 21, 1910, the vessel sprang a leak & sank 110 miles off Cape Matapan, Greece, while en route from Sifnos (also Greece) to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore. No lives were lost.

The vessel's initial owner was Turner Edwards & Co. of Bristol. The Mercantile Navy List of 1900 lists William Henry Edwards, of Bristol, as the vessel's then owner, while the 1910 version of such list records John Fowler, of Bristol, as her then owner. Per Miramar (thanks!) in 1912, Chr. Hannevig of Horten, Norway, became the vessel's owner. And in 1915, Transatlantic Motor Ship Co. A/S of Oslo, Norway, became her owner. 245.4 ft. long, signal letters MHJW. Miramar also advise that the vessel was wrecked on Sable Island (located 300 km SE of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada) on Sep. 12, 1915 while en route from Philadelphia to Marseilles, France, with a cargo of petrol.

A steamship. A now long expired e-Bay item, a fine travel scrapbook primarily re Queen, dating from about 1900, with 75 photos etc. included an image of Delano, at left. The vessel, which was completed in Jul. 1892, was built for Neptune Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. of Sunderland, who owned the vessel for its entire lifetime. W & T. W. Pinkney were, in 1897/98 at least, the vessel's managers. 320.0 ft. long, signal letters MRHB, 277 HP engines by George Clark Limited of Sunderland. Miramar advise (thanks!) that the vessel was wrecked at Seal Cove, Newfoundland, on Aug. 14, 1902 while en route from Rotterdam to Baltimore with a cargo of iron.
Ann English, a friend indeed of the site, advises that the vessel's cargo was of steel billets. And that the vessel, en route from Rotterdam to Baltimore via Sunderland with a crew of 27, was wrecked near Renews, Newfoundland (Renews–Cappahayden, located on the eastern shore of the Avalon Peninsula, 52 miles S. of St. John's). Ann's great grandfather, Captain Edward English, Chief Examiner of Masters & Mates in Newfoundland & a Master Mariner himself, served on the Marine Board of Inquiry into the loss of Delano. Report #6418. You can read the report here. The 'Evening Telegram' newspaper, of Sep. 9, 1902, reported that Aid, a wrecking tug, had landed 241 ingots & slabs of steel ex Delano along with 25 barrels of manganese. Y99610

The vessel was launched on Apl. 28. 1892. Per A & B (Delcampe, images), 1 (u-boat.net, May 1918 sinking), 2 (data in French) 3 (link 2 'Google translated), 4 (Compagnie Fraissinet), 5 (Compagnie de Navigation Fraissinet), 6 (Miramar, link, you now must be registered to access). The vessel was initially owned by J. Millas & Sons of Ibrail (now Brăila) Roumania (Romania), however Lloyd's Register of 1892/93 indicates that the vessel was rather registered at Cephalonia, Greece. 302.0 ft. long, signal letters HNLD. In 1897, Vagliano Bros., of Piraeus, Greece, acquired the vessel. In 1900, the vessel was sold again, to Cie Marseillaise de Nav. à Vapeur (Compagnie Fraissinet), of Marseilles, France, & renamed Suzette Fraissinet. On May 11, 1918, the vessel was sunk by German submarine UB-52, Otto Launburg in command, when 37 miles south of Cape Spartivento, Calabria, Italy, while en route from Tunis & Bizerta (both Tunisia) to Gibraltar. No lives were lost. Is there anything that you can add? Y

The webmaster has a few editions of Lloyd's Register ('LR') available re the period of 1892/93 thru 1899/90. In those LR editions the vessel is consistently stated to be owned by Actieselakabet "Hertha", of Kolding, Denmark, but with different names following the italicised words. i.e. (O. Hirth) in 1892/93, (C. J. Haas) in 1894/95, & from 1896/97 thru 1899/1900 (S. W. Bruun). I presume that it is the names in the brackets which record the then actual owners' names. 183.3 ft. long, signal letters NGDQ. Niels Hald-Anderson advises (thanks!) that in Mar. 1908 the vessel was sold to J. N. Maslennikov, of Archangel, Russia, & renamed Leonid. Niels further advises that the vessel was wrecked off Cayenne (French Guiana, NE coast of South America) on May 10, 1910. Wrecksite.eu states that the barque was wrecked on May 12, 1910. It would appear (per a 'Google' data snippet) that the vessel hit a rock & became a total wreck. The vessel's captain, acting on behalf of the owners, sued the colony for 150,000 fr. (francs) & was awarded 72,000 fr. The underwriters sued the colony also - for 300,000 fr. - re the loss of goods. Is there anything you can add?

Hindustan, later Valmaseda (a steel steamship) ![]()
2420
Osbourne, Graham & Co. of North Hylton
This vessel history has been made possible in part with the assistance of 'The Trades Increase: A Centenary History of Norex PLC', published in 1994 by the World Ship Society & written by John Lingwood & Kevin O’Donoghue. All of whom we thank. The vessel, which was launched on Sep. 6, 1892 & christened by Mrs. Squance, was built, at the cost of £25,920 to the order of J. W. Squance & Company of Sunderland, which entity was the partnership of John W. (William) Squance & Francis J. (James) Common, both of Sunderland. When the vessel was delivered, however, all 64 shares in the vessel were registered, not in the name of J. W. Squance & Company but rather in the named of John W. Squance personally, who then sold some of such shares to others while proceeding to form a limited liability company to own the ship. That limited liability company, named 'The 'Hindustan' Steam Shipping Company Limited' ('Ltd') was incorporated on Aug. 2, 1893 & initially owned 62 of the 64 shares of the vessel. John W. Squance became the vessel's manager. Lloyd's Register ('LR') of 1892/93 however records 'J.W.Squance&Co.' as the vessel's then owner with J. (John) Hazard her captain, while the Mercantile Navy List ('MNL') of 1893 records John W. Squance as the vessel's then owner & lists Ltd as the owner only from 1894. 290.4 ft. long, signal letters MTBR (later JTHN), 219 HP engines by John Dickinson & Co. of Sunderland, though MNLs of 1893 thru 1900 state 200 HP only. From 1897, the vessel was registered at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. thru, I read, 1899, but MNL of 1900 still records the vessel as Sydney registered. Its first voyage to Australia, so far as I can see, left London for Algoa Bay, South Africa, on Nov. 17, 1896, went on to Mauritius & there loaded 2,000 tons of sugar for delivery to Adelaide, South Australia (all as per this Mar. 22, 1897 newspaper article). You can read of many of the vessel's voyages from 1897 to 1901 in this 'pdf' research study which investigates the introduction of infectious diseases into Christmas Island. Amongst the vessel's ports of call were, in addition to Australian ports, Surabaya (Java), Cape Town (South Africa), Singapore, Karachi (then India) Buenos Aires (Argentina), Manchester (U.K.), Delaware & Philadelphia (both U.S.A.), Cuba & Queenstown (Ireland). With cargoes of coal, wheat or other grains, sugar &, on one voyage at least, livestock. For a portion of such period, the vessel was, I read, under charter to Adelaide Steamship Company. Of interest, perhaps, on Nov. 26, 1897, the vessel, during a major storm in the area, slipped her moorings in the Yarra River at Melbourne, Victoria, & collided with Carte Blanche, a ship. The agents of Hindustan agreed to pay for the repairs to Carte Blanche. The incident was considered to have been unavoidable in the storm conditions. Also, in Jan. 1898, the vessel was en route from Batavia (Indonesia) to Melbourne, with a cargo of sugar, & Captain Hazard in command. Leaving the harbour at Albany (Perth), Western Australia, the vessel ran aground, immediately reversed engines & got off safely without damage. An Inquiry into the matter advised the captain to, in the future, use a local pilot when entering or leaving a port with which he was not familiar. In Dec. 1899, the vessel collided with a dredger, I read, during a voyage from Philadelphia to Havana, Cuba. In 1901, the vessel was sold, for £21,516, to 'foreign' owners & the U.K. registry for the vessel was closed. The new owners were 'Cia. Cantabrica de Navegación' of Bilbao, Spain, who renamed the vessel Valmaseda. Orbe y Gobeo, also of Bilbao, served as the vessel's managers. In 1908/09 per LR, E. Gorordo served as the vessel's captain & in 1910/11 D. Yarto so served. In Aug. 1910, while on its final voyage from Cardiff to Vera Cruz (Veracruz, Mexico), the vessel went ashore at Miami, Florida. The vessel was re-floated after a fortnight, but was apparently badly damaged. I presume that the vessel was then repaired because rather later on that same voyage the vessel was wrecked near Vera Cruz. Per Miramar (thanks!) on Nov. 1, 1910, the vessel, then en route from Cardiff, Wales, to Vera Cruz, with a cargo of coal, was wrecked on Rio Cana Beach 80 miles S. of Vera Cruz. There was no loss of life. These newspaper cuttings (1 & 2) relate to both matters. I have not yet read the circumstances. An image of Hindustan is available as Fig. 3 on page 4 of the research study referenced above. Is there anything you can add to the above? Or correct? Y

The vessel was a frequent visitor to Australia. Early on Aug. 14, 1907, near Newcastle, NSW, she was run into by Arawatta, a passenger steamer. Omba, later Ellerbek, later Okawango (a steamship) 2950
later
2948James Laing
The vessel was launched in Feb. 1894 (per LR) though I understand that the exact date of launch was Jan. 22, 1894. For Straits Steamships Ltd. ('Straits') of London (Wright Bros. & Co. the managers). Roger Barclay has kindly been in touch to advise that his grandfather, Basil Charles Combe (1871/1926) served as 2nd mate on Omba's 8 month maiden voyage. An eventful voyage that saw the ship nearly lost in the Bay of Biscay, hitting a Chinese junk, running into Aldgate, an 1892 steamer, at Port Said, Egypt, grounding in the Delaware river & much more besides. The vessel loaded iron products (pig iron locos, engines etc.) at Redcar & Middlesboro (both North Yorkshire), for Kobe & Yokohama (both Japan), then on to Panay Island, Phillipines, to load sugar for Philadelphia, U.S.A., finally loading a varied cargo (grain, timber, 230 bullocks etc.) at Baltimore for Glasgow. You can read Basil's interesting journal either here or here (a 'pdf'). The Mercantile Navy List of 1900 lists Straits as Omba's then owner. In or about Feb. 1905, the vessel was sold to Heinrich Diederichsen of Kiel, Germany & renamed Ellerbek. The U.K. register for the vessel was closed in 1905. The vessel was sold again, in 1907, to 'Rhederei A.G. von 1896', of Hamburg, Germany, & renamed Okawango. A diesel engine by MAN (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg) was installed, to replace the original George Clark Limited triple expansion engines. In 1919, the vessel was sold to Emil R. Retzlaff, of Stettin, Germany. In late May of 1913, while under the command of Captain Stahl & with a crew of 23 all told & a single passenger, the vessel was en route from Huelva, SW Spain, to Stettin, with a cargo of 4,400 tons of iron (possibly zinc) ore. Thick fog was encountered when the vessel was off Ushant (a small rocky island in the English Channel off the coast of Brittany, near Brest, France). At about 5 a.m. on May 28, 1913, the vessel struck the Basse-Bridy rocks off (south of) Ushant. At Ar-Vridig. Water rushed into the hull & the vessel soon was abandoned & sank. It would seem that the ship's boilers blew up & the vessel broke in two. Distress signals were sounded. Those aboard had time to take to ship's boats & were rescued by Reine de France, a local fishing boat. Do visit this extensive French page, which is complete with an image of Okawango & a contemporary French newspaper cutting with detail about the disaster. 320.0 ft. long, signal letters NHDB, later RNLB, 237 HP, speed of 10 knots. On Aug. 18, 2009, the ship's bell was recovered from the wreck site (engraved Omba, of course). It was intended that the bell, once cleaned, would be put on display at the 'Musée des Phares et Balises' at Ushant. I cannot spot whether it is now, in 2017, on display there. Is there anything you can add? Y

Miramar advises that in 1901 the vessel became owned by Bethell Gwyn & Co., (of Australia) renamed Minilya, & that in 1910 the vessel became owned by the Philippine Government, renamed Rizal. But see link at left for quite different data re Minilya. The Mercantile Navy List of 1910 records West Australian Steam Navigation Co. There would seem to be very little data available about this steamer, which, specially designed for the wine trade, was launched on Jan. 8, 1898, for A. C. Le Quellec & Fils, of Bordeaux, France. Per A (Delcampe image, stated to be Stilbé, also see here), 1 (vessel's trial run), 2 (data, images, French text), 3 (link 2 'Google' translated, 4 (Miramar, link, you now must be registered to access). 330.0 ft. long, signal letters OTWG. The vessel attained a mean speed of 11 knots on 5 runs over the measured mile at its trials on Feb. 28, 1898. It was initially registered at Algiers, Algeria, it would appear. In 1916 the vessel became owned by Cie. Française des Chemins de Fer Paris-Orléans, of Nantes, France, with Soc. Maritime Aux. des Transports, the managers. Rather later, in 1929, Cie. Delmas Frères & Vieljeux of La Rochelle, France, became the vessel's owner. Much of the above is per Miramar (thanks!) who also advise that on Nov. 7, 1929 the vessel arrived at the Briton Ferry (between Swansea & Port Talbot, Wales) facilities of T. W. Ward, to be broken up. Actual break-up commenced on Nov. 14, 1929. Y
