Vessel not yet researched. Was originally owned by Anglo-Algerian Steamship Co. (1896) Ltd. of Swansea, with F. C. Strick & Co. Ltd. her managers. A snippet of data. On Feb. 3, 1915, it was published that Condylis had been sold to the Danes for about £30,000. Per Miramar that meant to A/S D/S Finland of Copenhagen, Denmark. Miramar advise that on Oct. 19, 1935, the vessel was wrecked on Selter Rocks, at 54.17N/3.33W. It was later towed off by S. Craig but sank in tow on Mar. 27, 1936. The text ex a now long gone e-Bay item, which text surely was extracted from 'Clyde Shipwrecks' originally published in 1988 by Peter Moir & Ian Crawford, later republished incl. in 2014. 324.0 ft. long, signal letters SDCG, 283 HP engines by George Clark Ltd. of Sunderland.

The vessel was launched on Jan. 16, 1900 for A. C. Le Quellec et fils, of Algiers, Algeria. A steel schooner-rigged steamer. A. C. Le Quellec & fils owned the vessel for its entire, if brief, lifetime. I have read it was 360.1 ft. long. The vessel was wrecked on Jun. 9, 1909 near Berville, at the mouth of the Seine river, while en route from Algiers to Rouen, France, with a cargo of wine or maybe a general cargo that included wine. The vessel ran aground (image at left) & was broken up in situ. Y

Hughenden

3097

Joseph L. Thompson & Sons Limited

The webmaster has not researched this vessel. Which was launched on May 1, 1900 (as Hazel Holme for Hine Bros.) & completed in Aug. 1900. Was owned by Hughenden Steamship Co. Ltd., which company would seem to have been owned by Charlton & Thompson, both of Sunderland. The Mercantile Navy List of 1910 lists 'The "Hughenden" Steamship Co. Ltd.' as her then owner & also references John H. Charles & Jas. Thompson. 'Blue Peter' in an article in the Sunderland Echo published on Mar. 19, 1964 advises the following words ex a letter written by T. Wells of North London:- 'I remember Charlton & Thompson. Their Hughenden was sunk in a gale in the Bay of Biscay with the loss of several Sunderland men before the first world war.' Indeed. Miramar indicate that the vessel, en route from Smyrna, Turkey, to Dublin, Ireland, with a cargo of barley, foundered in the Bay of Biscay on Dec. 21, 1911. Miramar does not reference any loss of life. An Official Inquiry was held into the vessel's loss - you can read it here. 342.0 ft. long (per Lloyd's Register), signal letters RTPN, 292 HP engines by George Clark Limited of Sunderland.

The vessel was initially owned by Cie. des Bateaux a Vapeur du Nord, of Dunkirk, France. In 1932, the vessel was acquired by Wah Shang Steamship Co. Ltd. of Shanghai, China, & renamed Hai Shang. In 1937, Wallem & Co. Ltd. of Panama, became the vessel's owner & named it Nord for the 2nd time. The above data is thanks to Miramar, who also advise that on Jan. 21, 1942, the vessel was sunk by a torpedo fired by German submarine I-66, while en route from Calcutta, India, with a cargo of coal. At 15.28N/94.36E, in the Indian Ocean, S. of Rangoon (now Yangon) Burma. Anything you can add?

Despite all the data which follows below, the webmaster has not researched this vessel, which was launched on May 18, 1905 & completed in Jun. 1905. Hopefully the vessel's history will be fully researched soon. Per 1 (Southampton City Council/Plimsoll Lloyd's Register data, Lloyd's Register ('LR') data Marathon thru Arica, 1930/31 thru 1945/46), 2 (many images, Kosti, Arica & Tirrenia used to be available at this site's old link. Now?), 3 (Miramar, link, you now must be registered to access). 364.6 ft. long (111.31 metres) perpendicular to perpendicular, signal letter MCHV later JGTP, speed 10 1/2 knots, 338 HP engines by J. Dickinson & Sons Ltd., of Sunderland. The vessel was initially owned by J. L. Mowinckel of Bergen, Norway, maybe by J. L. Mowinckel & Sohn. Much of the following data has been provided by Niels Hald-Andersen, whom we thank. In 1915 the vessel was sold to Atlantic Transport Co., of New York, U.S.A. & renamed Allaguash. Note Miramar rather lists Allaguash Steamship Corp. as her new owner. In 1918 the vessel was sold to Foreign Transport Co. & Mercantile Corp. ('ForeignT') also of New York, with no change of vessel name. And in 1919 sold again, to American Transatlantic Co. Inc., again of New York & again with no change of vessel name. In 1920 the vessel was re-acquired by ForeignT. In 1923 or 1924 the vessel was sold to Birte Jensen of Copenhagen, Denmark, (per Miramar, Albert Jensen A/S) & renamed Birte Jensen. It may have been sold in 1926 to D/S Codan II & renamed Guldborgsund. It would appear to have been sold twice in 1927, firstly to D/S Codan II (per Miramar D/S Codan A/S). And later in that year to M. G. Chrusachi of Chios, Greece (per Miramar, M. G. Chrussachi) & renamed Marathon. In 1931 the vessel was sold to S. A. M. Killingbeck of Larnaca, Cyprus, & renamed Kosti. Maybe with Costis & Lemnos the managers? In 1933 or 1934 the vessel was sold to N. (Nicholas) J. Pissis & M. (Michael) Weismann, of Piraeus, Greece, with no change of vessel name & sold or transferred in 1936 to John D. Chandris, N. J. Pissis & M. Weismann still of Piraeus. And transferred again in 1937 to J. D. Chandris & N. J. Pissis of Piraeus. On Sep. 4, 1939 the vessel sank next to Trelleborg after machine (engine?) damage. It clearly was raised & repaired. In 1941 the vessel was sold to Rederi AB Atalanta, of Helsinki, Finland, & renamed Arica. Niels advises that new engines were installed in 1941, which seem not to be referred to at 1. In 1950 the vessel was sold for the last time, this time to Anchor Shipping Co. (maybe AB Anchor Shipping OY) & renamed Tirrennia. On Jan. 23 or 24, 1953, while en route from Constanta, Romania, to China with a general cargo that included ammonium nitrate, the vessel sank after an explosion & fire. At a point 145 miles E. of Port Sudan in E. Sudan. It would seem with no loss of life. The above text surely needs correction, which would be welcomed.

Braziliana, later Forfar (a turret ship)

3827

William Doxford & Sons Limited

I have listed this vessel as initially owned by Furness, Withy & Co. Ltd. ('Furness') of West Hartlepool. However Miramar indicate that it was rather owned by British Maritime Trust Ltd. of West Hartlepool. Was launched as Billiter Avenue for J. Sunley & Co. of London. A snippet of data. On Feb. 3, 1915, it was published that Braziliana, then owned by Furness, of Liverpool, had been sold to Sutherland Steamship Company Ltd. of Newcastle. Who renamed the vessel Forfar. Per Miramar, on Dec. 4, 1917 the vessel was sunk by German submarine UC-17, 115 miles off the Lizard, while en route from Blyth to Gibraltar with naval stores. 3 lives were lost.
