OF HYLTONVESSELS BUILT BY 'GALES'
The 'Gales' shipyard listing can be found here.
A start only on a 'Gales' build list. Quite a lot more data to yet be added. But enough data already, perhaps, to get the preliminary page on site. The list which follows is a list of 'Gale' built ships - commencing in 1812 - a transcription of a multi-page James Corder hand written list kindly provided by Simon Gales. It is most easy to make errors in transcribing such data, but I have tried to be as accurate as I can. As always, the data is subject to adjustment as & when additional data comes to hand. And corrections are invited.
It would seem that there was no 'Gales' numeric build list maintained. So there are no 'Gales' hull numbers. The numbers beside each vessel are accordingly MY numbers, for site navigation purposes & for the easy reference of others. Also the listing sequence has been revised, in view of the lack of both official numbers & launch dates, to show the vessels in alphabetic order within the applicable year. So you (and I) can easier find the vessels.
? vessels in total, it would seem.VESSELS BUILT BY 'WILLIAM & JOHN M. (MOWBRAY) GALES' - AT SOUTH HYLTON (88 of I think 89)

The hand written list then has the following words.
At this point the yard divided; I am not clear if the Latona & Adahline were not built by William Gales only. I do not know of any quarrel but sheer stress of work, too much for one yard. William carried on at So. Hylton followed by his son Thomas.
This refers, I believe, to John M. (Mowbray) Gales starting up another yard on the opposite side of the river Wear, but in addition to rather than in competition with the first 'Gales' yard. So the next following list is re William Gales only. The John M. (Mowbray) Gales list will be provided below - just five vessels so far listed.VESSELS BUILT BY 'WILLIAM GALES' - AT SOUTH HYLTON (41 of I think 51)

J. HARDIE & M. CLARK (1846 thru 1849)
JAMES HARDIE (1850 & 1860s)
(OF SOUTHWICK)The 'Hardie' shipyard listing can be found here.
A 'Hardie' build list.
The information which follows originates from the 3 pages of the 'Corder Manuscripts' that relate to James Hardie. The Corder Manuscripts, which comprise many volumes of hand written data assembled over a lifetime by James W. (Watson) Corder (1867/1953), are held in the archives of the Sunderland Central Library or maybe at the Local Studies Centre there. I am advised that binders of page copies are available for viewing by library visitors.
Understanding Corder's hand-writing can at times be difficult! Hopefully, in the future, the data will be refined, perhaps in relationship to data recorded in Lloyd's Registers or other sources. Corrections & additions are invited.
Images of the three pages in question can be seen here - 1, 2 & 3. I would like to think that James Corder would have wished his research to be made widely available through this modest page.
The numbering at left below is the webmaster's numbering. No official lists would seem to exist. And beware! I have amended the Corder sequence so the vessels are in alphabetic order within each year - so you and I can find them easily. And some of the detail has already been modified to reflect data in Lloyd's Registers.VESSELS BUILT BY 'J. HARDIE & M. CLARK' - AT SOUTHWICK (7 known)
