AU BORD DE LA MER
On page 01 of this site is an extensive text in English which refers in the detail words to an 1864 work by Schenck entitled 'Repose on the Seashore' & purchased by the State i.e. by France. It is a work for which I have been searching for a very long time indeed.
I am pleased then to able to advise that I think that I have found a reference to it, via a Google search that I have so far been unable to repeat. I find it not by the name above i.e. 'Repose on the Seashore' but rather with a French language title of 'Au bord de la mer'. The English translation does not seem, to the webmaster, to be a literal translation of the French title, but I am sure, none the less, that what I have found IS the work identified as 'Repose on the Seashore' in that essay written in 1878.
What I found was a large image which seems to be a photograph of the works ex the 1864 Paris Exhibition that were purchased by France. Within that large image are seven individual works one of which, identified as # 1748 is the work by Schenck. To view what I viewed, go here, & click on the image at left. The Schenck portion of the large image is shown next. Modest as it is, I am most grateful to have it.
I am no further ahead however, in knowing where the original of the work is today.
More when I get more! Maybe YOU could provide new data or could provide a clue as to where new data about the above work (or indeed any other Schenck work) might be found. I would truly welcome your input.
