SHEEP IN SNOW STORM
Since the text below was written, quite a few years ago now, Norman D_____ has advised the webmaster that the work is now for sale. The webmaster's role in this matter is simply to show the work via this page. Should you have an interest in acquiring it, you might write to the webmaster who undertakes to forward your message to the owner for his response. That is my initial approach to the situation, at least, where providing exact data as to the full identity of the vendor, might prove to be ill advised.
We thank Norman D_____ of West New York, New Jersey for the Schenck work which graces this page.
It is, Norman advises, an oil of 19 x 31 inches in size. Entitled 'Sheep in Snow Storm'. Signed at bottom left. In a fine frame which I had to largely cut to show the work itself as large as possible. But you have a glimpse of the decorative frame at the left of the image. The work has been in Norman's family since 1946.
Titles for Schenck's works are most difficult. Why! Because the subject matter of them all is so very similar. At times I think the single word 'sheep' would cover virtually every last one of them!
But the title of the work seems to be known. It was sold at the '5th Ave Art Sale Dec. 14 - 15, 1892'. And the title was clearly stated in red on the label affixed to its rear.
That label follows, along with Schenck's signature from the work, - both kindly provided by Norman D_____.
A pretty work. Norman we thank you!
The following work was, when this page was updated, to be sold at auction in New York on Sep. 27, 2006. I have not sought permission to show the image here, but I trust that its use on this non-profit & informational site will prove to be in order.
The work was for sale at 'Doyle New York', of 175 East 87th Street, New York, NY, 10128. Tel: 212-427-2730 whose website is here. I was unable to provide a link directly to the actual auction item, but a search for 'Schenck' at that link used to bring you to the work that follows, described as being an oil on canvas of 19 7/8 x 28 3/4 inches in size, signed at lower left & with a sale estimate of U.S. $800 - U.S. 1,200 - Lot 2014 in Sale # 06BEO3. The artist was said to be Danish. Doyle New York also indicated 'Frame rubbing. Varnish makes it difficult to detect restoration but under raking light there does appear to be inpainting around the shepherd as well as some in the sky when examined under UV light.
Now the work was also listed on e-Bay but no longer.
The item sold for U.S. $1,000 (plus buying premium of 22.5%, I presume) - to a live bidder on the floor at the actual auction.
Titles for Schenck's works are most difficult. The title of the work, as just indicated, may better be referred to as a description of the subject matter of the work?
More when I get more! Maybe YOU could provide new data or could provide a clue as to where new data about the above works (or indeed any other Schenck work) might be found. I would truly welcome your input.
