UNKNOWN SCHENCK WORK No. 9
In many of Albert Schenck's works, he presents a scene from nature of an animal in distress high on a mountain & under adverse weather conditions. Often with an accompanying gallery of scavengers awaiting the poor animal's inability to defend itself. A number of such works are visible throughout this site with perhaps the most famous being those featured on site page 03.
And here, thanks to Shannon ______ of San Diego, California, whom we sincerely thank, is another such fine Albert Schenck work. 19 x 23 inches in size, plus maybe a little extra under the frame edge. A winter scene of a sheep with its rear leg held in the air, most probably injured, unable to escape - her coat snagged on the undergrowth behind her. A sad but most beautiful scene.
The date of the work is not known & a label on the rear of the work simply says 'Sheep'. I cropped the image that Shannon kindly provided to be able to show the painting in its entirety without scrolling. And as a result, had to cut off the lovely old picture frame. But you can get a good idea of the beauty of the frame at both left & right. The work, Shannon believes, was once owned by the Texaco Foundation, but a great many years ago, now.
This Albert Schenck work was offered for sale via e-Bay in Oct. 2006. It was listed by 'whatsitworth2' of Rhode Island, U.S.A. I saw that the vendor was, in fact, Conway's Vintage Treasures of Post Office Box 422, N. Kingstown, Rhode Island, 02852. Their website is here & when this page was updated on Oct. 18, 2006, the Schenck work was listed there (no longer) at a price of U.S. $4,200. It was soon sold! Read on.
The work was described as being 21 x 15 inches in size, in an ornate frame visible here, with an overall size including the frame of 26 x 21 inches. Signed at lower left as you can see below. - 'Spectacular still life of shepherd with flock on mountain side during blizzard.' The opening e-Bay bid value was U.S. $1,999 & it sold at that price on Oct. 17, 2006 to a private bidder.
The work is most beautiful. So without more ado, here is the Schenck work for your enjoyment. Is it not beautiful indeed!
More when I get more! Maybe YOU could provide new data or could provide a clue as to where new data about the above works (or indeed any other Schenck work) might be found. I would truly welcome your input.
