UNKNOWN SCHENCK WORK No. 8

It is likely that Albert Schenck made drawings & sketches preparatory to creating his final works. A pose of a sheep perhaps, a close-up of of an animal's ears or nostrils, or some other detail to prepare the way for the final work & to perfect its composition. Well the next work may very well be just such a preparatory sketch.

The work was sold via a live auction on e-Bay on Mar. 4, 2005. The live auction item consisted of two sketches, one of a goat & another of a turkey. Only the goat image was shown on e-Bay & it would seem that the entire sketch of that item was likely not shown. I am not sure that I understand the words used to describe the item, so I repeat them here: 'Graphite (one with crayon) on paper, sight sizes to 11 1/2 x 18 1/2 in. (29.2 x 46.9 cm), framed.' The item sold for U.S. $800 (plus a premium of 22.5%) to a live bidder on the auction floor. The date of the work was not stated & it probably never had a title. I have slightly reduced the image size for presentation on this page, so the entire work can be viewed without scrolling.

The auction was by Skinner, Inc., auctioneers & appraisers, with galleries in Boston & Marlborough, Massachusetts. They can be contacted via their web site while their e-Bay vendor site can be found here. Do drop by! I do hope that there will be no objection to my using the data & related image on this non-profit & informational site.

The sale was & still is, in Aug. 2009, recorded on the www.findartinfo.com website, where they indicate the sale price was U.S. $940, that the works were 'granite on paper' & 11.5 x 18.5 inches in size (29.2 x 46.9 cm). Date unknown. And they indicate that the works were signed by the artist. The data was still there as above, but you need to subscribe to access any more info.

It would be wonderful if one day we could locate an image of the turkey!

Sketch of a Goat

UNKNOWN SCHENCK WORK No. 22

Much of the wording above applies equally to this item - a 'Schenck' sketch which was offered for sale on e-Bay in Oct. 2010 - here. Do drop by and see the e-Bay listing.

The vendor indicates that the drawing was found hidden behind a painting that had been brought to the U.S.A. by a very old Portuguese family. And had therefore been protected for many many the years. It is a pencil drawing, 8 1/4 by 5 inches in size, & is signed at lower left. As you can see, of plowing in progress, & of great detail.  "L x 5"W and the motif  is of  people plowing a field with a Horse and a Donkey hooked to a plow with bird's flying around. The detail is just beautiful and the drawing is signed lower left "Schenck) in print. The drawing is in excellent condition for the age of this drawing because of being behind a painting.

A 'Schenck' pencil sketch.

More when I get more! Maybe YOU could provide new data or could provide a clue as to where new data about the above work (or indeed any other Schenck work) might be found. I would truly welcome your input.
