COASTAL FLOCK (1865)

This work is entitled 'Coastal Flock' & came, a number of years ago, from the website of Cincinnati Art Galleries, LLC of 225 East Sixth St., Cincinnati, Ohio. It was for sale when this was first written ~ an 1865 oil on canvas on board, 36" x 57", & signed lower right, I understand. It would appear that the work must have been sold, because the artist's name is not referenced under artist search. My earlier page indicated that the price was U.S. $15,000 at that time.

The Cincinnati Art Galleries page must have previously had some descriptive words because a source of data about the artist used to be indicated - 'Artists of the 19th Century and Their Work'. On page 01 of this site you can read exactly who wrote that book & what it said about the artist.

CHÈVRES SUR LES SOMMETS ENNEIGÉS

The image below, is of a work sold Jul. 10, 1999 by Étude Gestas, an auction house from Pau, France. The work is entitled 'Chèvres sur les sommets enneigés' & it is 0.49m x 0.81m in size. 'Chèvre' means a goat, I understand.

The work is brilliant with all of the dark rocks & the dramatic terrain. I wish I had a larger image of it!

I thank a site visitor for the data that follows. Clearly, the very same work was in an earlier auction sale conducted by Fischer Auktionen, of Lucerne, Switzerland, on May 11, 1994.  Lot # 3230. Entitled in German 'Gebirgslandschaft mit Ziegen', which seems to translate into French & English as being 'Avec des chèvres de montagnes' & 'With mountain goats'. The dimensions seem to match perfectly ~ 50 x 81 cm. in size (or 19.7 x 31.9 in.). I have no data as to whether it was sold at the auction. The puzzle perhaps is that the work is identified by 'Artnet' as being by an artist named Schenk, not our Schenck (note different spelling) but rather a German artist named Albert Schenk. The related image, clearly the same as you will agree, is next.

More when I get more! Maybe YOU could provide new data or could provide a clue as to where new data about these works (or indeed any other Schenck works) might be found. I would truly welcome your input.
