AN EMIGRANT DEPARTURE : INISHMAAN, ARAN ISLE. (1913)

I had virtually no information on the work that follows. But now I have a little more. It was an e-Bay item in Apr. 2005, but the listing is no longer available to see what the vendor had stated about the work and about the print source. The print was clearly a page from a magazine, but which particular magazine it was & when it was published, I did not know. The e-Bay item was purchased by Marcus Hemy of the U.K. who kindly provided the image that I first present.

The word 'Inishmaan' above is not a mistyping by the webmaster. It is the name of an island off the coast of Galway and Clare, Ireland. One of the Aran Islands in outer Galway Bay. I now know that from receiving a two-part article that Thomas Hemy wrote re his visit to the Aran Islands and was published in the August and September 1915 issues of Boy's Own Paper, available now on site at pages 56 & 57.

I now know that the image below was published in 'Pictures of 1913', a "Pall Mall Gazette' extra in May 1913. One shilling! 116 numbered pages but lots more pages at front and back with advertisements. This particular Hemy image was on page 102, as you can indeed see. The 'extra' issue covered the works of art that were presented at 'The Royal Academy' in 1913. So the original work would surely have been in colour.

And there was a second work by Thomas Hemy included also. Entitled 'An Aran Funeral, Inishmaan.'

I will add a bigger image when I have a moment, & an image of the magazine cover. Both now on site, below.

Here is the image in a larger size. The actual image as printed is of approximately 8 3/16 x 5 3/8 inches in size.

And here is the cover of the magazine in which the above print appeared.

I had read that The Boy’s Own Paper Annual #37 & particularly issue #10 within it re Aug. 1915 had at page 599, an article entitled 'In the Isles of Romance'. It was the first of two articles, the second appearing later in the same volume - in issue #11 re Sep. 1915 at page 690. Both had illustrations by Thomas M. Hemy. Might the above image be one of the images that appeared in the BOP's indicated? I now know that assumption to be wrong. The images on this page were not in the Boy's Own Paper articles but presumably were painted as a result of his visit to the Aran Islands, however.

The two articles & the related images are now on site. On site pages 56 & 57.

AN ARAN FUNERAL, INISHMAAN. (1913)

Above, I indicated that two Thomas Hemy works were featured in 'Pictures of 1913', a "Pall Mall Gazette' extra in May 1913. Of works of art that were presented at 'The Royal Academy' in 1913. Here is the second Thomas Hemy image with title as you can read below.

The actual image, as printed is of approximately 5 1/2 x 4 1/16 inches in size, a little less than half the printed page.
