A wonderful summary of all of the medals that were issued re the Volturno prepared by Bernard de Neumann. Bernard has indicated that the summary should be regarded as a 'work in progress' since it may well be subject to later correction as new data is received. The report which appears below is also available as a pdf file. Here. If you do not already have it, to be able to view that file you will need to download and install the free Acrobat Adobe reader.

You would be interested to know that Bernard is a member of the executive committee of the 'Gallantry Medallists' League', and runs the 'Gallantry Awards List', a discussion group to help descendents/relatives of gallantry award recipients from around the world find details of the particular award. Bernard has earlier published an extensive report re the 'British' (but not the 'Foreign Service') Sea Gallantry Medals. It is available here.

While every word on this total site has been written by the webmaster, he has been helped along the way by a great many people who have provided precious data that they possess - documents, postcards, images, whatever. And without all of that support, the site would surely not be as comprehensive as it is today. Those contributions, large and small, have been gratefully received. But while I have been in contact with all of those contributors, and in may cases almost continuously, it has always been in writing. There are no images on site of any contributor. Until now!

Here is an image of Mathematics Professor Bernard de Neumann, of The City University, London, whose extensive research into matters maritime has provided a significant part of the total site content, including this very page. So I am delighted to be able to share with you an image of Bernard. The painting is by celebrated portrait artist John Wonnacott, CBE, and it won the top prize at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters' annual show in London, England, in April 2005 - and the related Ondaatje prize of £10,000.

I will raise a glass of red wine to you, Bernard, since I see that you have already drained yours!

The image appears here with John Wonnacott's kind consent, and of course Bernard's. Bernard considers himself to be in good company, because it was John Wonnacott who painted a well known picture of the British Royal Family (The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen Mother, Prince Charles and his two sons, not forgetting the corgies, of course) to mark the Queen Mother's 100th birthday. A painting which is no less than 12 feet high. Bernard tells me that his painting is 5 ft. by 4 ft. in size.

In fact, I see that this was not the first Wonnacott painting of Bernard. You can see that royal painting & that other painting of Bernard, via this page. Maybe I will raise a glass of bitter, Bernard, instead of one of red wine. Or maybe both!
